balsa house

In brief....

To start with you need to have a bit of an idea of what you want your house or structure to look like. Doing some rough drawings is a good start, however keep in mind it's likely that the design will change as you build it. You'll also need to collect all the construction materials you'll require- card, balsa wood (from hobby or craft stores) glue, plaster, customwood, corrugated card, sharp craft knife, etc.

The attached photos are of a rather elaborate house I made- this did take me a long time to complete, so unless you're a very patient person then I'd recommend something a tad simpler.

Firstly start with the base. I knew from the outset I wanted to build a tall house sitting perched on a hill, so I cut out a circular shape from MDF customwood and went from there. To make the hill I started with a small box in the centre for the house to sit on and applied expanding foam which I shaped to form the hill. I then applied a few layers of plaster over the foam, which I later painted green and stuck some fake grass on which I bought from a hobby shop.

I used plaster over a small cardboard box to shape the base of the house.

The rest of the house was constructed out of card which I taped and glued together, and once happy with the design I glued balsa to the card to give the impression of weatherboards.

I managed to find some finely corrugated cardboard which was perfect for making the roof...
